More Roses

Here is the second part of my blog about my favorite top 2 Dozen singers of songs about Roses. These roses cover everything from people (Rose of England) to places (Bed of Roses) to things (Mighty Like A Rose).

Charlie Zahm was born in Florida, but now lives in Pennsylvania. He sings and plays Celtic, Maritime, and Traditional American music. Charlie plays a number of instruments including: guitar, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, concertina, flute, penny whistle, and bodhran. He has released nearly 2 dozen albums and 2 DVDs since his debut album “Songs of Ireland, Scotland and the Sea” in 1992. Charlie was in the movie Gettysburg.

Tommy Sands was born in 1945 in Co. Down, Northern Ireland; he is a singer, songwriter, radio broadcaster and political activist. One of his current projects is teaching prisoners in Reno, Nevada how to write music. Reno named May 18th as “Tommy Sands Day” for his outstanding work as a musician and for being an ambassador for peace. He is 8 solo albums and many more as part of the Sands Family.

Natacha Atlas is a singer that was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1964. Her father is of Moroccan, Egyptian and Palestinian ancestry (and Jewish) and her mother is a British Islam. She blends Arabic, hip hop, and reggae with western electronic music. She released her first solo album (Diaspora) in 1995, after leaving the group Transglobal Underground. Her version of Mon Amie La Rose is her most successful song. She was appointed by Mary Robinson to Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Conference Against Racism. She speaks Arabic, French, English and Spanish. The movie Brick Lane features Natacha on four songs.

Daniel O’Donnell was born in Dec. 1961 in Co. Donegal, Ireland. He is a singer-songwriter whose music ranges from country to easy listening. His tenor voice has been amazing audiences in Ireland, the UK, the US and Australia since 1983. He has an extensive list of albums and honors to his credit.

Loretta Lynn is The Coal Miner’s Daughter. It’s a title for one of the most commercially successful female performs of all time. The title also refers to her hit song, her album, her autobiographical book and movie. Loretta Lynn was born in 1932 in Butcher Holler, KY, and she worked her way to stardom in Nashville by singing country, honky-tonk and gospel music. Her belief that no topic was off limits (everything from birth control to war) helped her earn the title “The First Lady of Country Music.” She released her first song in 1960 with Zero Records and in the same year her first fan-club was formed in Nashville. She has 56 studio albums that span 6 decades.

Westlife is an Irish boy band that formed in 1998. The group has been very successful; rating only behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley for the most Consecutive #1 Singles in the UK. Westlife consists of Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne and together they have sold 11.9 million copies of their 12 albums. They are currently on their farewell tour.

Elizabeth Marvelly is a soprano from Rotorua, New Zealand. She was born in 1989 and released her first album “Elizabeth Marvelly” in 2007. Her album went gold in 5 days. Her style is classical crossover and she sings both cover and original songs. Her second album (“Home”) was released 1 day before the Christchurch Earthquake (Feb. 2011) and she donated a portion of her record sales to the recovery efforts and she participated in the fundraiser “To Christchurch With Love” and helped raise over $115,000. She has toured with Sir Howard Morrison, Dame Malvina Major, and Amici Forever in New Zealand and around the world with Paul Potts.

Chris De Burgh was born Christopher John Davison in 1948 in the Santa Fe Province of Argentina. He is a British-Irish singer-songwriter. He grew up in a 12th century castle in Co. Wexford, Ireland. He attended Marlborough College in England then Trinity College in Dublin and obtained Masters Degrees in English, French and History. His first album in 1975 was “Far Beyond These Castle Walls,” and was unsuccessful, but a single from it remained on top of the Brazilian charts for 17 weeks. His first success in the UK was in 1981 which was a compilation of his earlier albums. His most successful song Lady in Red from the album “Into the Light” is by far his most successful and recognizable song.

Roger Whittaker is an Anglo-Kenyan musician and teacher. He was born in 1936 in Nairobi, Kenya. His first professionally released single was in 1962. He has earned 250 silver, gold, and platinum albums. In Germany, Roger received a “Golden Tuning Fork” based on record sales and a public vote.

Reba McEntire is a singer, songwriter, record and television producer and actress from Oklahoma. She signed her first recording contract in 1975 with Mercury Records. She has had 26 albums since. Twenty-eight of her albums have been gone gold, platinum or multi-platinum. She has been in several movies and has starred on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun as well as in her own television show Reba. Her such for her family’s roots can be seen in an episode from the third season of “Who Do You Think You Are?”

John Denver (1943-1997) was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. in Roswell, New Mexico. He sang, played guitar, piano, keyboards and violin. He released his first solo album in 1969 with RCA Records. His music style is an unique mix of folk, pop and country. He was also a humanitarian and political activist; he promoted issues like hunger and environmental conservation. In 1984 he wrote The Gold and Beyond for the Olympics in Sarajevo.  He was also a painter, photographer, skier, golfer and flyer.
